Why should you be concerned about how humane your meat is?

July 29, 2014

Concerned about animal welfare but can’t stand the thought of giving up that big, juicy steak? Eating animal protein is a great way to get the nutrients your body needs to thrive.

In order to get your dose of meat without sacrificing your belief in animal rights, you should consider purchasing organic beef and lamb.

These items are considered to be humane meat as the animals are allowed to run free and have plenty of access to outdoor areas in the sun.

A limit is applied to the number of animals permitted to live in one space and this must be enough to guarantee their comfort.

Stock allowed out in the open will have a better quality of life and are not confined to cages or crates. They also have access to pasture and shade when they need it.

Organic animals are not given unnecessary antibiotics, as they are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle without the need for extra medication.

While there are clear benefits to the animal as they are healthier, these also flow through to the consumer as well. When you eat organic meat you will be exposed to fewer chemicals, antibiotics and hormones.

They are given adequate food to enhance their health and wellbeing. The food used should be good for growth and output as well as their overall welfare.

In order to be certified organic, feed must not contain any substances that artificially promote growth or that contain genetically modified organisms or synthetic amino acids.

Animal suffering is kept to a bare minimum throughout the animal’s life. When they are transported, the time spent in the back of a truck is kept as short as possible and unlike conventional farming, electrical stimulation or allopathic tranquillisers cannot be used during loading or unloading.
