When it comes to labels, ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ can mean very different things. Certified organic meat, vegetables and skin care are products that have been verified by regulators. ‘Natural’ is harder to define and harder to guarantee.
‘Natural’ is only governed by guidelines and can be used to describe many different products. There aren’t any strict regulations or third-party inspections on what can be called natural. The word is promising, but it’s important to look a little closer.
With products such as skin care, the term can be used to describe something that uses potentially harmful chemicals or is heavily processed. Even when something says it’s natural and organic, it might not be 100 per cent certified organic. Sometimes, and this is particularly true with cosmetics, a product will be described as organic when it has only one organic ingredient with a slew of non-organic substances. Be sure to check out the ingredients list and that it also has the ‘certified organic’ label.
With meat, the guidelines are taken more seriously. Arcadian Organic offers both certified organic and natural meat as separate products. Natural products from Arcadian are, as with organic, completely grass-fed and free range and they don’t have any antibiotics or HPGs. The natural product is an option for someone who might want to go organic but finds the price a stretch. It’s an upgrade from a conventional product and caters to a healthier lifestyle.
The organic products were created without any toxic synthetic pesticides or herbicides and any chemical or petroleum-based fertilisers. They are also completely free of GMOs and irradiated products or ingredients. The companies and farms sporting the ‘certified organic’ label have earned it. On top of heavy regulations, organic farmers and manufacturers are often inspected by third-parties without any warning to make sure they’re up to scratch. All farmers carrying the Australian Certified Organic mark on their product must produce organically for three years before they get the seal of approval.
